Happy new year and welcome to 2008. I just have a couple quick notes, first, it has become apparent that I will need to finish school. Consequently, the next couple years will not be the best time to start an official biz. However, I am a stubborn person and will be back with a vengeance when I'm done. I have been working on a degree for a few years and doing this blog too, but I found out recently that there are time limits on degrees, so I'll have to push through. I expect you to stay tuned as I will continue to freelance and submit my games and fiction and keep you posted on the progress.
Second and on a lighter note, I got to play some games this holiday season. I played Wii bowling; for the three of you who don't already know this, the Wii is fun. I probably don't have much to add to the Wii phenomenon, plus I only played for like ten minutes, at a bar. But, I will note that it was cool to see my three year old and her grandfather both enjoyed the bowling game on the same night. What doesn't everyone go to bars with there young children and grandparents?
I also got to play a couple family board games. The first was a kids game, again with my three year old, called The Littlest Pet Shop. Pretty fun, if you are four. You get a pet- they are little bobble head toys, a bunny, doggy, kitty and a turtle. Kind of high end as far as board game pieces go, but cute, toys in and of themselves. Then you just have to visit four locations on the board, the playground, salon, playroom and the other escapes me, pick up a token at each location. Then it's back to the start for the win. Nothing fancy, but if you land on the monkey business space you get to steal a token. Simple, but fun, and I got to watch my little girl take to a new game, you can almost see kids thinking, putting things together, really awesome experience. The other game was about the same concept, called You Might Be a Redneck if... you travel around and pick up items for your trailer. The differences were subtle; Pet Shop had flowers for spaces to land on and a spinner to move. Redneck had old tires for spaces and you had to guess at one of the You Might Be a Redneck if... jokes to move, right answers generally got you higher numbers of spaces to move. The special spaces in Redneck were, draw a Dumb Luck card where you had to flip a coin - with a possum head and tail on it - and either get to do the generally advantageous thing (but not always) on the card or give it off to another player to do.
I don't want to make Redneck sound simple it was not, but it was not really a strategy game either. It was, as advertised, pretty dang fun. I just thought the two games were pretty similar. Almost like levels of difficulty on the same concept (run around get stuff, return home.)
I'm no game reviewer either but I will put up differing content here until I can get back to business. So expect some different musings this year, more often and shorter than last year.
